On the 27th of May, 2022, as a prominent Kenmare native, Senator Mark Daly personally extended the official state invitation to President Michael D. Higgins, and his wife, Mrs. Sabina Higgins, to visit Kenmare to officially open Cumann na mBan Park. It was an honour to welcome Mrs. Higgins to officially open the park. The naming of the park commemorates the crucial role of local Cumann na mBan members in the fight for Irish independence from the British.
Senator Daly, along with his mother, Eileen, and neighbour, Patricia O’Sullivan, worked together to ensure this land located on the Tubbrid road leading to their townland came into public ownership. They played a great role in ensuring the land came into public ownership to become Cumann na mBan Park. Serving on the Government’s All-Party Consultation Group on the Decade of Commemorations, Senator Daly championed the initiative to ensure revolutionary Irish women received equal recognition in the naming of public spaces.
