“Chestit praznik”! The 3rd of March is Bulgarian Liberation Day, which marks the date of the national liberation and resturation of the Bulgarian State from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. Senator Daly noted that despite coming from opposite sides of Europe, we share similarities and historical connections. In fact, two Irishmen Pierce O’Mahony and James Bourchier made individual contributions to the establishment of the Bulgarian State in its early days. 2020 also marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Bulgaria. |
"Time to get hands on with the national anthem in Irish Sign Language"
Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Senator Mark Daly, is supporting the St. Patrick’s Primary Schools National Anthem Challenge by Bishopstown Community School, who are asking all primary schools to learn about the national anthem and learn to perform it in Irish Sign Language, the official language of the deaf community in Ireland. Bishopstown Community School are leading this great initiative and have included in their communications to Primary Schools details of tutorials they have compiled for students to use as part of this challenge. All tutorials and information on the challenge are available at https://www.bishopstowncs.ie/isl-national-anthem and all should be sent directly to [email protected] by their deadline of Friday the 12th of March. |
Having previously worked with the teachers and students in Bishopstown Community School to create the first ever Irish National Anthem in Irish Sign Language as part of the Seanad Public Consultation on the National Anthem, An Cathaoirleach is delighted to promote this initiative along with all the leaders of the parties and groups in Seanad Éireann. The Cathaoirleach will organise VIP tours of Leinster House to the schools who are identified by Bishopstown Community Schools, when public health guidelines allow.
Senator Daly said “I hope the students and teachers have a wonderful time creating this video. Having previously worked with Bishopstown, I know how passionate and committed they are to ensuring the promotion of Irish Sign Language and I am delighted to be working with them on this initiative.I would also like to stress that this should all be undertaken in full compliance with public health guidelines and the challenge can be completed virtually.” |

Saturday the 20th of February marked UN Mother languages day. Mar a dúirt Pádraig Mac Piarais “Tír gan teanga tír gan anam” “A country without a language is a country without a soul”. The Irish language is an integral part of our culture and who we are as a people. Initiatives such as this serve as reminder of the importance in supporting our mother language and it's significance to our history and our people. The UN has indicated that early childhood years are crucial in developing language skills and on the back of this initiative we are encouraging parents, teachers and all people to use more Gaeilge where possible and promote our mother language. |

This month Senator Daly proposed amending the 89 uses of the term "Chairman" to "Chairperson" in the Seanad Éireann Standing Orders. The Amendment was ratified on Tuesday the 19th of January with the support of all leaders in the Seanad. Words matter, and this is but one important step to bringing equality to the Houses of the Oireachtas. |

The Ceann Comhairle and Senator Daly have recently come to the decision that the UN flag will fly outside Leinster House for the duration of Irelands two year membership on the UN Security Council. Ireland has served as a member of the UN Security Council three times previously in our nations history: 1962, 1981-1982 and 2001-2002.
In an increasingly polarised world the UN represents an opportunity to work with nations around the world and endeavour to bring us closer together. Our themes for the campaign of Partnership, Empathy and Independence represent who we are and what we will aspire to achieve while members of the Security Council. Mark would like to wish our representative on the Security Council, Ms. Geraldine Byrne Nason, and her team the very best of luck in their work. |

On January 26th, Seanad Éireann heard statements on the Mother & Baby Homes Report in conjunction with Minister O'Gorman and the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth. The Report was truly harrowing to read and the stories contained within detail the horrific experiences of women and children in these institutions. Senator Daly asked Senator Victor Boyhan to Chair the debate due to his own personal experience having spent part of his childhood in one of these institutions. Victor said "it was a privilege and an honour to be one little voice that in some way represents some of the people that grew up with me". Mark would like to note that Victor is anything but a little voice, the courage he has displayed by speaking about his experience is truly commendable and incredibly brave, as is true of all the survivors and their pursuit of justice. Reading the Report, Senator Daly was reminded of his own meetings with Sheila O'Byrne, who spent many days standing outside Leinster House in all sorts of weather, looking for someone to take responsibility for what had happened to her and fighting for the truth to come to light. |
